Emergency Dental Treatment

Home » Emergency Dental Treatment

If you are suffering badly with a toothache or any problems in your mouth, you may well need the help of a dentist. A good emergency dentist will be able to offer treatment to those who need it, ensuring their pain is reduced at least in the short term.

In essence, our dentist will be able to relieve pain and suffering, but there may be more work required to get to the root of the problem, and this will need to be assessed separately at a later time, usually after making an appointment. An emergency dentist will help to ‘make good’ any issues and relieve pain and suffering as far as possible, enabling the patient to make that all-important appointment to ensure the rest of the dental work or repairs are done as soon as possible.

An emergency dentist will be able to:

  • Prescribe pain relief
  • Prescribe antibiotics for infections
  • Place a temporary dressing on a single tooth
  • Extract a single tooth (simple extractions only)
  • Refer to a specialist where needed
  • Give advice

Therefore an emergency dentist would not be able to fix dentures if they were broken, carry out complex extractions or extract more than one tooth, adding permanent fillings, or mending veneers, crowns, and bridges.

What Is Non-Emergency Dental Treatment?

Toothache can be devastatingly painful, so anyone who is suffering from it might consider their case to be an emergency. However, not every toothache is classed as an emergency, even if it is excruciating. Unless you are suffering from severe pain, the following issues are not something an emergency dentist can help you with:

  • A chipped tooth
  • A lost filling
  • A lost crown
  • General pain (with no immediately discernible cause)

What To Remember If You Require Emergency Dentist Treatment

When you need a dentist to look at your mouth, you should always arrive ahead of time as there will be paperwork to fill out. The emergency dentist will be extremely busy, and any delays to your treatment will mean delays to everyone following on after you. Be as helpful as possible, and get there early when you can.

Don’t forget to bring a form of payment with you, and you must inform the dental surgery you are attending of any medical issues you might have and any medication you are taking. Do this even if you don’t feel it is relevant to the problem you are having with your teeth; it is far better for the emergency dentist to have too much information than not enough.

You should also be aware that the emergency dentist might not be the dentist you usually see – this will depend on the urgency of the care needed, where you are, and who can provide emergency dental care. If this is the case, you will need to answer additional questions, even if you have already answered them for your own dentist.
