Crowns VS Bridges

Perfect teeth can often feel like an impossible dream, no matter how often you brush and floss. As time goes on, your teeth can become chipped and stained or even become crooked. This can impact your confidence and is why many people opt for cosmetic dentistry to bring a bright, straight smile back. There are two primary options when fixing your smile which are crowns and bridges, so what’s the difference, and which one is right for you?

Crowns vs Bridges

When looking at possible restorative dentistry options, your dentist will direct you towards Crowns vs Bridges.

Crowns

A crown is a procedure where a cap is placed on top of your tooth. It is ideal for covering misshapen or discolored teeth, as well as protecting a chipped tooth. Dentists have also used crowns to support teeth following a root canal or following large fillings.

The cap is constructed using porcelain or a combination of porcelain fused with metal. Each crown is custom-made to suit you, so it will not look out of place next to the rest of your teeth.

Bridges

Bridges are similar to crowns, but they cover a larger surface area. If you have lost more than a single tooth, a bridge is a fantastic way to create a natural smile. As the name suggests, bridges create a bridge over gaps after losing a tooth or teeth. In extreme cases, a bridge is preferred to prevent losing bone mass around the jaw.

This fills in gaps in your smile, offering a cosmetic benefit. However, it is also excellent for your oral health and overall comfort. A bridge can protect your teeth further and prevent tooth loss in the future, too.

Which is best for you?

While crowns and bridges are similar dental procedures, they are not entirely the same, which is something to bear in mind when deciding which treatment is best for you.

Neither procedure is completed on the day. Crown placements involve two appointments where the dentist will first make an impression of your tooth to align the crown properly. The next appointment attaches the crown with strong adhesive to keep it in place.

The same goes for bridges. Again, the dentist will make an impression, and the second appointment involves the crown and pontic being attached to your teeth with the same adhesive.

Both procedures are beneficial, but the one you choose depends on your needs. If you have superficial tooth damage, a crown procedure is the best approach. On the other hand, patients with missing teeth (either singular or multiple) will benefit more from a bridge to support the new tooth and replenish their smile. With each procedure, you are assured confidence and peace of mind that your smile will light up the room.
